Chennai: Air Customs officials intercepted 2.5 kg of gold granules smuggled in juice powder at the Chennai airport on Monday (May 10).
Based on intelligence on gold smuggling via parcels at the foreign post office, officials kept a close eye on the situation.
A postal package from Dubai containing seeds was intercepted on suspicion of containing gold. The parcel, which was addressed to a person in Chennai, was then opened and examined.
It contained four containers of a branded Instant Orange juice mix, as well as packets of oats and chocolates, according to officials. When the containers were examined closely, they were discovered to be unusually heavy.
The containers still had their original aluminium foil lids, but inside were gold granules and juice mix powder.
Under the Customs Act, 2.5kg of gold granules worth Rs 1.20 crores were recovered and seized.
“Searches at the recipient’s address revealed some inconsistency. “The role of postal workers is being investigated,” officials said.
This method of smuggling via granules is said to be a new method that has been thwarted, they added.
