Rekha Kadiresh, a two-time former Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) corporator and Karnataka’s ruling BJP leader, was killed by two bike-borne assailants outside her office here on Thursday, police said. Rekha was about 45 years old and was survived by her daughter.
Police believe an old rivalry is behind the killing, as Rekha’s husband S. Kadiresh, a rowdy element, was hacked to death on February 7, 2018, by a rival rowdy gang active in Cottonpet.
Cottonpet is one of Bengaluru’s oldest localities and commercial areas, as well as one of the most densely populated. S Murugan, Additional Commissioner of Police (East), told the media that the incident occurred around 10.30 a.m., while the BJP councillor from Chalavadipalya was supervising the distribution of relief materials and breakfast.
According to the police, Rekha was at her office near the Cottonpete flower garden, supervising the distribution of relief materials and breakfast, when two bike-borne assailants attacked her with a machete.
According to the police, she was rushed to Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), where she died.
“Prima facie investigations revealed that it was a planned attack or that an insider may have been involved, as CCTV cameras installed outside the office were found to be switched off,” the police said, adding that despite being in a densely populated area, neighbours claim to have heard only “some noise.”
“By the time neighbours came out, the attackers had sped up on the bike and found Rekha in a pool of blood,” police added.
Three years ago, in February 2018, Rekha’s husband S Kadiresh, who was facing more than 14 cases, including extortion and murder, was hacked to death near Muneshwara temple in Chalavadipalya, while he was overseeing Shivaratri preparations. The fallout from this murder led to the murder of Shobhan just two months later as part of the Kadiresh gang’s revenge plan.
According to the police, Kadiresh and his gang had been feuding with Peter’s men in the area, and Kadiresh’s rivalry grew after his niece eloped with Peter in 2017.
In 2018, his murder took a political turn, with the state BJP’s top brass, including BS Yediyurappa and R Ashoka, alleging that Kadiresh was murdered at the behest of JD(S) MLA B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan, who is now in Congress and a close aide to the Leader of the Opposition, Siddarmaiah.
