In a viral video, nearly five auto-rickshaws (tuk-tuks) race while riding dangerously close on an arterial highway near Chennai.
The illegal racing video was shot on the Tambaram-Maduravoyal bypass, a wide stretch of highway with a lot of heavy vehicle traffic.
Nearly two dozen bikes are also seen riding recklessly in front of and behind the autos, with the majority of the riders or pillions wearing no helmets.
As evidenced by the video shot by a pillion rider, the entire group of racers is not only putting themselves in danger, but also posing a serious threat to other read users.
The majority of the bikers are seen riding alone, while the pillions are seen filming the race on their mobile phones.
Typically, such auto races involve large sums of money and betting, with the winner receiving anywhere between Rs 2000 and 10000.
Unfortunately, despite a fatal accident last year during one of these races, the threat of highway racing appears to have returned. Back then, one person was killed when a racing car collided with a lorry.
