“We believe this is related with driver settings and frame rate limiters”.
New World’s potentially hardware-busting abilities were first reported on the MMO’s dedicated sub-reddit, which is now closed. In the main menu, “I just bricked a 3090 after setting my graphics quality to medium and then hitting save,” a user named greyone78 complained. “It’s impossible to believe. Is there anyone else who has experienced a catastrophic failure like this? “…..
As it turns out, this isn’t an isolated issue, and reports of RTX 3090 malfunctions after playing New World (primarily affecting cards made by EVGA) began spreading across social media and beyond, prompting speculation that the problem may be caused by uncapped frame rates in the game’s menus. The problem appears to be related to power spikes and overheating caused by uncapped frame rates in the game’s menus, according to multiple responses.
While Amazon had initially remained silent on the matter, a post from a Customer Service representative on New World’s Game Support forum has now acknowledged that New World can cause 100 percent GPU usage on EVGA RTX 3090 graphics cards, blaming “driver settings and frame rate limiters” as the source of the problem.
In their post, the representative suggested that RTX 3090 users disable overrides in their card’s driver settings and cap their frame rate to 60 in the Visuals settings before restarting the New World game client to resolve the issue. “This will assist in preventing issues with the GPU’s utilisation,” the representative explained.
Following the post, some users have stated that overheating and crashing issues persist (on a variety of different cards, not just the EVGA model specified) even with default settings enabled and the frame rate restricted to 60 frames per second. As a result, owners of high-end graphics cards may want to proceed with caution and wait for further updates from Amazon if they plan on putting New World’s beta through its paces before proceeding.
