The latest Oculus Quest update lets you easily invite others to play

Oculus is starting to roll out its v31 software update to its Quest and Quest 2 headsets today, and it includes a slew of useful quality-of-life enhancements. The most significant benefit is that it will be simpler to invite friends and recent teammates who aren’t already friends to play a game or use an app together. Whether you’re playing a game or using an app, pressing the Oculus button will bring up the universal menu as usual. However, more apps will soon include a new “Invite to App” button next to the “Resume” and “Quit” buttons, which will allow you to invite other people to your game or app. If your invited friends accept your invitation, you will be able to see them in the drop-down menu. Beat Saber, Blaston, Demeo, Echo VR, ForeVR Bowl, Hyper Dash, PokerStars VR, and Topgolf with Pro Putt are just a few of the games that will soon be receiving this feature.

If you don’t want to confine your group to virtual reality, an upcoming update to the Oculus app for iOS and Android will allow you to create a multiplayer session on the fly, right in your mobile device. For the games and apps that are supported, you will be able to create a link that can be shared with others to invite them to join the group. Additionally, you can specify how long the link will be active. It should go without saying that any major platform with a social component should have simple invite tools like these, and I’m pleased to see that Oculus is making some strides in this area.

However, depending on how you use your Quest headset, you may or may not find use for the additional features included in version 31, which are nonetheless important. The Browser app will also gain the ability to save and autofill passwords, which will be protected by an unlock pattern, as part of the update. Both the unlock pattern and passwords are stored on device, Oculus says in its press release.

The Messenger app will now include send and read receipts, as well as reaction emoji, which are taken directly from the Facebook platform. Granted, this should make responding to people more convenient because you won’t have to fumble with the virtual keyboard.

Those of you who are waiting for v31 to arrive on your headset should be aware that it may take several weeks to arrive on yours.
