The AIMIM offered to run gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, just hours after the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) denied him a ticket.
Earlier in the day, BSP supremo Mayawati declared that her party will make every effort to avoid fielding ‘bahubali’ (strongmen) or mafia candidates in the upcoming elections, and that Ansari, who is currently imprisoned in Banda, will not be given a ticket from Mau again.
Syed Asim Waqar, national spokesperson for the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM), said the party’s doors are open to Ansari.
“If Ansari wishes to run for office, the doors of AIMIM are open to him. We will give him a ticket and also ensure his victory “He revealed this to PTI.
Waqar also urged other Muslims not to “purchase tickets” from any other political party, claiming that doing so will ensure their defeat even if they accept money from them.
“Votes from other communities (parties) do not transfer to Muslims. I invite Muslims who want to run for office to join AIMIM. They will be given tickets by the party “He stated.
Mayawati announced the nomination of BSP state president Bhim Rajbhar from the Mau seat, which is currently held by Ansari.
On September 7, Atiq Ahmad, a jailed gangster and former MP, and his wife joined AIMIM in the presence of its leader, Asaduddin Owaisi.
While Ahmad’s wife, Shaista Praveen, joined the AIMIM at a press conference, he did so in his absence.
In defending his decision to induct Ahmad, who is facing several criminal charges, AIMIM’s chief Asaduddin Owaisi stated that some BJP leaders were also facing criminal charges.
