New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nominated Priyanka Tibrewal to run in the by-election to the Bhabanipur seat against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday (September 10, 2021). Tibrewal, a lawyer and one of the petitioners in the post-election violence cases filed against the Mamata government, stated after her nomination that her fight is not against any individual but against injustice.
“My fight is not against any particular person, but against injustice. This battle is being fought to save the people of West Bengal. Yes, it is directed at a specific individual (CM) who remained silent during the state’s violence “According to Priyanka Tibrewal.
When asked about her by-election campaign slogan, Priyanka said, “Nijer meyekei chaay chaay chaay chaay chaay chaay chaay chaay chaay Mamata was not born in Bhabanipur, whereas I was.”
“She (Mamata Banerjee) has already been defeated in Nandigram. She is now fighting in this election to keep the chief minister’s seat. My task will be to reach out to the constituents and inform them about the atrocities, torture, and violence perpetrated by her party on opposition workers following the assembly elections. I am confident that the people of Bhabanipur will vote for me and help me defeat her “she insisted.
Tibrewal joined the BJP in 2014 and is now the state vice president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the party’s youth wing. She ran for the Entally seat in the West Bengal Assembly elections in 2021, but was defeated by a TMC candidate by a staggering margin of over 58,000 votes.
The by-election to Bhabanipur was required after cabinet minister Sovandeb Chattopadhyay vacated the seat to allow Mamata Banerjee to return to the state assembly following her defeat in Nandigram to Suvendu Adhikari.
