In an incident reminiscent of the 2012 ‘Nirbhaya’ case, a 34-year-old woman was raped and brutally assaulted inside a stationary tempo in suburban Sakinaka, police said on Friday, and her condition was said to be serious.
According to an official, the accused, Mohan Chouhan (45), was arrested within a few hours of the incident. According to him, the police control room received a call in the early hours of Friday about a man thrashing a woman on Khairani Road. A police team rushed to the scene, where they discovered a woman lying in a pool of blood. According to the official, she was taken to the civic-run Rajawadi hospital.
According to the preliminary investigation, she was raped and assaulted with an iron rod in her private parts, he said, adding that the incident occurred inside a tempo parked on the side of the road. Inside the vehicle, bloodstains were discovered. According to the official, the woman’s condition was critical, as determined by doctors.
Acting on some leads, accused Chauhan was arrested under IPC sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 376 (rape), he said, adding that an investigation was ongoing. In December 2012, a young woman dubbed ‘Nirbhaya’ was brutally gang-raped and assaulted inside a moving bus in Delhi, sparking outrage across the country. She died in the hospital after a few days of fighting for her life.
