Coronation Street has dominated the Inside Soap Awards with a total of seven wins, including the top prize of best soap.

David Neilson, who plays Roy Cropper in the ITV show, was named best actor, and Sally Carman, who plays Abi Franklin, was named best actress.

The show was also nominated for best storyline for its hate crime plot involving characters Seb and Nina.

“It’s the kind of intimate storey – taking us close to an all-too-real tragedy – that packs a punch,” said Gary Gillatt, editor of Inside Soap.

The storey depicted Seb and Nina being attacked because of Nina’s alternate identity, as well as the ramifications for their family and community.

The judges praised the show for tackling difficult topics and collaborating closely with the Sophie Lancaster Foundation on the storyline.

Jude Riordan, who plays Sam Blakeman, was named best newcomer, and Dame Maureen Lipman received the award for funniest performance.

She stated: “It’s fantastic to be funny in this day and age – and I’m just as happy as if I were 19.

“It’s really, really nice to come in at 75 and be named best newcomer in 2019 and now the funniest person in soap – it’s really, really nice.”

In addition to being named best actor, Neilson was nominated for best partnership for his on-screen interactions with Mollie Gallagher, played by Nina Lucas.

He stated: “It’s wonderful for me and Mollie that quirky characters like Roy and Nina are popular with viewers.

“They may be perceived as eccentric, but they are valued and loved, which is wonderful.”
