At least seven dead after Brazil cliff collapses on boats

At least seven people have been killed after part of a cliff collapsed onto leisure boats on a Brazilian lake.

Another three people are missing, and 32 people have been injured as a result of the accident in the country’s south-east.

A video that has gone viral shows the moment the rock detaches from the cliff face, as onlookers try to warn the boats below.

One of the boats appears to have sunk, while the others escaped.

The collapse occurred at 11:00 a.m. local time (14:00 GMT) after days of rain in Minas Gerais state, which made the cliffs more prone to collapse, according to local fire officials.

In a video of the accident, a woman can be heard saying, “That piece will fall out.” “Get out of there,” another warns, as the cliff collapses onto the boats.

According to Lieutenant Pedro Aihara, three vessels were hit by falling rock. Nine people were hospitalised out of the 32 injured.

Divers and helicopters are searching for any remaining survivors in the water.

Twenty people were initially reported missing, but Lt Aihara said that after checking hospital lists, the majority of them were found.

Alessandra Barbosa told EPTV that she is looking for information about her uncles, who were staying at the site for the weekend and decided to take a boat tour of the cliff.

“I contacted several local hospitals. So far, I have received no information about them. We are distressed and worried “She stated.

“We get nervous because we don’t know anything and it’s family, right? To us, family is everything.”
