Make-up mogul Kylie Jenner has become the first woman to reach 300 million followers on Instagram.

Ariana Grande, who was previously the most popular woman on the app, is now tied for second place with Selena Gomez. Each of the singers has 289 million.

However, Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo is still the most followed person on Instagram, with over 388 million followers.

Jenner has recently been relatively quiet on the image-sharing platform.

Her partner, rapper Travis Scott, was performing at the Astroworld music festival, in Houston, Texas, on 5 November, when 10 people died during a stampede of fans

Jenner, who is expecting their second child, only broke her social media silence on Christmas Eve, when she shared a photo of her mother, Kris Jenner.

The following week, she wrote about the “blessings” and “heartaches” she had in 2021.

Instagram, founded in 2010 by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger and acquired by Facebook in 2012 for $1 billion (£0.7 billion), now has 1.3 billion users.

The app is used by 500 million people every day.

Its official account, @Instagram, which features its favourite photographs from creators all over the world, has the most followers, with over 460 million.

Ronaldo is the first person to have 200 million followers.

Lionel Messi, another footballer, has also surpassed the 300 million mark.

Former wrestler The Rock, reality TV personality Kim Kardashian, and singers Beyoncé and Justin Bieber also have accounts in the top ten.

As Instagram’s popularity has grown, it has come under fire for being responsible for harmful online content.

After it was revealed that the company’s own research showed it could be harmful, Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen called it “more dangerous than other forms of social media.”

Instagram stated at the time that the study demonstrated its “commitment to understanding complex and difficult issues.”
